Race Driver: Grid confirmed for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC
Atari, one of Australia’s leading sources of interactive entertainment and Codemasters® today announced Race Driver: GRID™ as the full and official title for the game introduced under the working title of Race Driver One. Race Driver: GRID is the new racing experience from Codemasters Studios, creators of Colin McRae: DiRT™ and the V8 Supercar™ series, and is set to deliver a step-change in the racing genre.
Coming mid 2008, Race Driver: GRID is set to capture every moment from the starting grid to the chequered flag and concentrate those moments into an intense and dramatic race experience. Race Driver: GRID is being developed for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft®, the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system and Games for Windows®.
“Race Driver: GRID is all about the race.” said Gavin Raeburn, Executive Producer at Codemasters Studios. “The next iteration of our DiRT engine combined with a decade of experience in developing driving games enables us to put the player at the centre of the action like never before. Damage, packed grids, intelligent opposition and unprecedented race day atmosphere will combine to deliver an experience like no other.
Says Ralph Fulton, Chief Game Designer. “GRID focuses on everything that happens between the start grid and the chequered flag: the drama, the rivalries, the aggression and the crashes. This is not a game about collecting cars or spending all of your time in the front-end tuning suspension settings or designing liveries. We want to make racing exciting again.”
Race Driver: GRID will take players to beautifully realised and dramatic race locations over three continents to compete in an unprecedented variety of racing events. Packed with the most powerful race cars – new and classic, circuit and drift – players will compete to conquer the most prestigious official race tracks and championships and then go beyond to compete in challenging city-based competitions, through to road events and urban street races. |

Guitar hero and World of warcraft makers merge
TWO of the world's biggest videogame companies will merge in an $11 billion deal that will combine the Guitar Hero and World Of Warcraft franchises under one roof.
The owner of Blizzard Entertainment, French media and telecom group Vivendi, announced the $US9.85 billion ($11.13 billion) deal with Activision Inc on Sunday.
The two game companies will merge into an industry heavyweight with annual revenue of more than $4 billion, rivalling the world's biggest independent games publisher Electronic Arts (EA).
Blizzard Entertainment has been responsible for the successful Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo franchises, while Activision is riding high on the success of the Guitar Hero, Call Of Duty and Tony Hawk series.
The complex deal will give Vivendi a 52-per-cent stake in the new company, to be called Activision Blizzard.
"This turns Activision into an EA-like company," said Michael Pachter, an analyst with Wedbush Morgan Securities.
"It turns them far more global, puts them in China, where they haven't been, and in (online games), where they haven't been."
Vivendi will contribute its Vivendi Games business, which it valued at $9.18 billion, and provide $1.95 billion in cash for the 52-per-cent stake in Activision Blizzard. These terms value the combined company at more than $21 billion.
Activision Blizzard will operate as a publicly traded company. The news surprised some commentators after Activision's recent surging sales and profit.
"This company didn't look like it was positioning itself for a sale," said Mike Hickey, an analyst with Janco Partners
"They've had a phenomenal year and everyone likes to go out on top, so maybe that's what they're doing." |

Greenpeace raps naughty Nintendo GREENPEACE has blasted Nintendo for environmentally-unfriendly practices, with Motorola and Nokia also in the firing line.
Games console maker Nintendo "completely fails to show any environmental credentials," Greenpeace said in its latest report measuring the policies of electronics companies on toxic chemicals and recycling.
Nintendo, the maker of the hit Wii console, scored zero out of 10 in Greenpeace's "Guide to Greener Electronics," which aims to encourage manufacturers to get rid of harmful chemicals.
Manufacturers of television sets and games consoles were included for the first time in the latest edition of the quarterly guide.
"Nintendo completely fails to show any environmental credentials and Microsoft and Philips do little better," the report said.
Swedish-Japanese group Sony Ericsson took first place, with Samsung and Sony in second and third.
Nokia and Motorola fell in the rankings after Greenpeace investigations in six countries showed company staff unable to help consumers with enquiries about product recycling.
"Nokia representatives in the Philippines, Thailand, Argentina, Russia and India were not informed about their companies' own programmes and in many cases provided misleading information," the report said.
Motorola staff in the Philippines, Thailand and India were unable to direct customers to collection points, according to Greenpeace.
"Many companies have made big strides to improve their products and recycling schemes (...) but no company has so far succeeded in offering an entire range of products free of the worst toxic chemicals or a comprehensive, free, global takeback scheme to ensure responsible recycling," the report concluded. |
